With a breathtaking show at the Avante Festival, on September 5th, the Portuguese punk-rock and pop group Anarchicks proved once again that they know how to captivate an audience of all ages with their music and lyrics. Irreverent, they captivated without compromise and ignited hearts. “Song has never ceased to be a weapon,” they told Blindspot after the concert on the “25 April” stage.
Anarchicks performed at the 50th anniversary of the Avante Festival with their full five-member lineup, including two guitars for the first time.
They played unreleased tracks from their upcoming album, as well as classic favorites, with Rita Sedas on lead vocals, accompanied by guitarists Adam d’Armada Moreira and Inóspita, bassist Synthetique, and drummer Katari.
While acknowledging that taking up the fight for rights and freedoms always attracts pressure from those who wish to mold and shape the band’s influence, they are quick to emphasize that yes, there are places where they are not wanted, “but we don’t want to be in those places.” “There are always many who want a band with a rebellious profile, but only if it doesn’t go where it wants to go,” Rita underlines. “Yes, a band that could be controlled and molded would be convenient, but that’s not our path,” adds Adam.
They reject the idea of a resistance that selects easy battles. “We are here to continue in the direction we have chosen and not to let ourselves be domesticated,” emphasize Inóspita, Synthetique, and Katari.
Formed in 2011, the band has won over a diverse audience that attends their shows. “It’s a great pleasure to see teenagers at our shows,” says Rita Sedas. “And they are brought by their parents, who are also fans of the band,” adds Katari.
“Loose Ends”, the band’s latest album, was recorded in 2019. The next one is about to be released. And there’s more: Anarchicks already has a show scheduled to celebrate the band’s 15th anniversary, on November 13th, at Casa Capitão in Lisbon. “We’re going to reunite with old friends from the band, all those who have accompanied us throughout these years,” concludes Rita.
